Mini Poodle Skirt (Black/Pink) Adult Costume

pink poodle skirtThere were many different fashions that epitomized the 1950’s and the poodle skirt is definitely one of them. It was popular because its full skirt allowed the dress to swing freely which made it good for dancing. A poodle skirt was usually made of felt in a solid and bold color with a design appliquéd or transferred on to the fabric. Usually the design was of a French poodle although later designs such as flowers and flamingos were seen. This mini poodle skirt costume is a pure 50s outfit with its off-the-shoulder black velvet top and fuchsia pink mini-skirt with a beautiful black poodle appliqué outlined in sparkling silver studs. Added to this is a very chic black scarf.  This outfit is also available in black and red.

When we think about the 1950s and men’s fashion we often think about the likes of Cary Grant, Rock Hudson and Gregory peck dressed in grey flannel suits. Clothing was quite conservative and for work wear there wasn’t much choice of color for men and apart from grey, dark blue, dark brown or charcoal. Suits tended to be more tapered and jackets shorter and single breasted. Even ties were a dark color and tended to be more slimmer. Most men of the era would wear a hat, usually a fedora. When it came to casual wear, 1950s men wore cardigan sweaters, casual shirts and pants.

For younger men, however, fashion was about making a statement. In the 1950s movies The Wild One (1954) starring Marlon Brando and Rebel Without a Cause (1955) starring James Dean, we saw men wearing black leather jackets, jeans and t-shirts.

Towards the end of the 50s came a movement known as “beatniks”. This movement was characterised by young people trying to break away from a conformist lifestyle and to be more individual.  A stereotypical beatnik would wear a black turtleneck sweater, black pants, black beret, sunglasses and have a goatee beard.

I hope these mens 50s costumes have inspired you to dress up for this era. For female 50s costumes, visit our main 50s costume page.
